Danube-Networkers

Interview with Gheorge Fianu

Text: Gheorge Fianu

My name is Gheorghe FIANU and I am going to recount, briefly, some of my memories about the Danube...

As a student and later as a Biology and Geography teacher and respectively as a school inspector, during the 50 years of activity I have been preoccupied to know the nature of our country and even that one of other European countries. For this purpose, together with the colleagues from the Argeş County teaching the same disciplines and with groups of pupils, I have organized and performed scientific documentation trips within all regions of the country. Together with my family I visited some European countries too, for relaxation and treatment.

The Danube River and its Delta were among the objectives we visited in Romania during the summer trips. Thus, I visited by ship together the graduates of some schools and colleges the harbors: Orşova, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Turnu Magurele, Giurgiu, Brăila, Galaţi, Tulcea and Sulina and also the resorts of the Black Sea Coast. I have studies the flora and fauna of the Danube's pass and of Delta. Here I swam in different lakes and I fished.

For several years I organized 7 days camps, during of which the teachers and pupils have studied and collected certain plants and animals from the visited areas, creating thus collections, which were then exhibited as documentary materials in the school laboratories and even at the Argeş County Museum.

When I was 40, the celebration of my birthday was organized at Mile 23 in Danube Delta, together with a "crew" composed by 40 persons (teachers and pupils)! This was the most nice and interesting day of my life! We ate only fresh fish dishes, fished directly from the Danube. Memories....memories....
